Colorado Native Chauncey Billups reportedly elected to Basketball Hall of Fame

One of Colorado’s favorite sons will be receiving the highest individual honor in the sport of basketball. Chauncey Billups will reportedly be enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024. A formal announcement is expected Saturday at the Final Four.

Billups was born and raised in Denver, starring at George Washington High School. The three-time Mr. Colorado Basketball and McDonald’s All American then went up US 36 to Boulder where he earned All-Big 12 honors as a Colorado Buffalo.

Billups was the third pick in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics and played 16 seasons in the NBA, including two stints here in Colorado with the Denver Nuggets. In 2009, he helped the Nuggets advance to the Western Conference Finals. His finest professional moment was leading the Detroit Pistons to an NBA Championship in 2004, being named NBA Finals MVP. He has also represented Colorado as a member of Team USA in the FIBA World Championships.

During his career, Billups was named to the NBA All-Star Team five times while receiving the NBA’s Sportsmanship Award in 2009 and Teammate of the Year Award in 2013. His jersey number has been retired at CU and with the Pistons, while GW High School named their basketball court in his honor. After retirement he worked as a TV analyst for ESPN before being named head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers.
